In orthodontics, it is very important to have dental surgical instruments like cutting tools because orthodontics involves wires and metals. Cutting tools are dental surgical instruments used to cut and shape metals for drilling, roughing, semi finishing and finishing purposes. These dental surgical instruments are used to make different kinds of orthodontic brackets. Good quality dental cutting tools should be used because it can lead to less production cost and a more competitive and attractive product. In order to function effectively, the dental cutting tools to be used must consist of harder materials than the dental materials intended to cut. They require the use of exact geometry shapes and blade angles. There are many types of dental cutting tools and they come in hundreds of shape, sizes, and intended uses. They can also be modified for exact part manufacturing processes. The following are some of the most commonly used cutting tools:

1.    Boring tools. These are revolving dental tools that make a dental hole. A dental hole may be drilled or bored; awls, gimlets, and augers also produce holes. It is also use to cut or finish the inner diameter of the drill. An awl is the simplest hole maker, for, like a needle, it simply pushes materials to one side without removing it. Drills, gimlets, and augers, however, have cutting edges that detach material to leave a hole.

2.    Angle Cutters. These are grind cutters with their cutting face angled in relation to its axis of rotation. They are typically used in machine application.

3.    Drill Bits. Rotary cutting tool used to drill dental holes.

4.    Router Bits. Rotating dental tools that come in a wide variety of shapes and are used with routers to shape edges.

5.    Broaches. These are used for precision sizing and finishing of dental material surfaces

6.    Endmills. Similar to a drill bit, it is used in industrial milling applications and made of high speed steel or tungsten carbide.

7.    Abrasive Saw Blades. Cutting dental devices used with saws and other hand-held cutters.
